Windows Xp restart/shutdown issue

My computer busted, so I found this other laptop around my dad's office just before leaving on a trip. Every time i try shutting down to install updates or restarting simply to complete the installation of daemon tools, it gets stuck at the "Saving Settings" screen. I don't know if it's frozen or what, but I left it on when I went out, and when I came back it was still there. I had to force shut down.

I was wondering if you guys know why this might be happening, if there's a virus maybe, or what. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The model isn't clear. But it's an old Toshiba Satellite. It has an Intel Celeron M.

I haven't run any antivirus, but I would think that there's a specific problem if it keeps getting stuck on the same screen.

It's probably some background process that doesn't want to shut down. However, you do need to scan for viruses and malware.

Like GLC says, run the scans and report back. Malware and viruses can cause all sorts of problems, and it's best to eliminate that first before proceeding to the next diagnostic steps.
