No XP COA with new PC

Hi guys

Dont know if I'm posting in the right place but here goes anyhow.

Just been down to my mums and she showed me her new desktop she has just bought from off ebay. She asked me to set it up for her but I stopped when I noticed no COA sticker was evident either on the case or elsewhere, so I didnt bother.

I think its just some guy knocking them out from home...nothing wrong in that but I always thought you had to supply a COA when distributing XP.

Am I right in assuming this?

Thanks in advance...

For your mom to be able to say she has a legal copy of the OS, she needs to have a COA.

It it was a custom build and not a brand-name build, the sticker might not be stuck to the case, and instead, be in the package with the CD.

Hi guys thanks for the responses.

No there is no sticker anywhere, the only cd it came with is a selfburned backup disc with printed instructions on how to use.

My mum assures me there is also ms office, paint shop pro, nero and others installed on there. All pirated copies I'm thinking cause there are no cds or serial numbers for them.

Sorry wiginer. But that was my thought from the first post. I would follow this up, you can get all the serial numbers using magicaljellybean and personally I would report it to the authorities.
People should not be allowed to get away with things like this.

Ebay is the LAST place where I'd buy a PC. If you want a custom build and don't want to build it yourself, find a local shop. Ebay is full of PC sellers that do exactly that - load it with pirated software and use cheap substandard components to keep the price down and maximize profits.

Your mother can get her money back in full if she opens a paypal dispute, hopefully thats how she paid and not with a money order or personal check. You have 45 days to start a dispute.
I get 3 to 5 machines a week with illegal windows XP installed on them, as soon as we realize this we call the customer, they either let us get them legal through Microsoft or I refuse to work on the computer. If they can't afford M$ we offer them Ubuntu which seems to be a winner in this case.

Khalil, E-Bay/Paypal don't want to know about fake software- I got caught the same way bought a machine off E-Bay paid by PayPal, found that both Windows and Office were fake software. Started a dispute and was then told I had no claim, like an idiot I sent the computer back and that was the end of everything- except for me being out of pocket. Seller was kicked off E-Bay a couple of weeks later, then went bankrupt.
DON'T believe all the E-Bay/PayPal hype about protection- as far as I was concerned it does NOT exist.

thanks for the responses again guys.

had an email from him and this is what he says, bearing in mind it has XP pro, ms office, paint shop pro, nero and others installed on it with no cds, serials, manuals or anything.

"Hi, I have not received any e-mails from you prior to this one.
What makes you think the software is pirated ?
If you go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ you can validate Windows from there.
The reason there is no COA is because these are not retail versions, these are OEM bulk licence versions with digital certificates, if you want the retail versions with CD, COA, manual etc.. you are looking at extra £160+.
If you are not happy with the PC then can I accept it back, provided it was purchased within the last 30 days."

I dont know if the XP digital certificate thing is true. But what of all the other stuff on there, surely there should be something to come with it.

here is the link to the item

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...lenotsupported

Can anyone tell me how I would respond. Thanks...

I see it came with a recovery DVD. That's fine, but without certificates of authenticity for XP and Office, and serials for everything else (unless they are trial versions), it's illegal. Tell him you need valid legal documentation for all commercial software. If he won't provide it, return it and report him to Microsoft.

The guy selling those PCs is a crook or at least dumb as a brick. He lists the PC with a Celeron E1400 as having a speed of 4gHz.

A E1400 is a 2.0 GHz dual core processor. It runs at 2 GHz. The core speeds DO NOT ADD like that.
