Shortcuts

Something happened when I was moving things from the desktop. Now, some of the shortcuts will not show up on my desktop unless I go to mycomputer and move up a level from there. Even if I drag them, reorder them, refresh etc. I cannot get them to show. When I am able to cut or paste, it doesn't seem to help. The ones so far that seem to be the biggies are network connection and internet explorer.
I know in the past on at least older computers, I could drag them and get them show on the desktop, but no luck here so far.

I have XP SP2. I intend to upgrade to SP3 when it stabilizes and I am able to backup a lot of data first. What can I do to fix this, or why is it that way? I might be able to delete and make new ones, but I am not sure if I know all of them or not since there are several. When I tried moving to a folder temporarily, it just made shortcuts to the shortcuts (which I have done before when trying) and I can't cut most of them I don't think and even if I do, it seems to go right back.

Right click on a blank spot on the desktop > properties > "desktop" tab > "customize desktop" button.

That's where you can show/hide the my computer, network places, and my documents icon.

For IE, go to start > all programs > right click on the IE icon > sent to > desktop

You should update to SP3. In fact, you should have months ago. SP2 is no longer secure, and SP3 is perfectly stable.

The only thing you may want to do before upgrading is to run malwarebytes to check for spyware/malware, and AVG to check for viruses.

I've done the right click on the desktop before, but not exactly for that. So, if they are "hidden" they won't show on the desktop when you boot up, but will if you move up a level from my computer?

What are the odds of losing data if I upgrade to SP3? I have some things backed, but a lot not. I would hate to lose it.

Follow the instructions and you'll be able to place the shortcuts on the desktop.

The upgrade to SP3 is fairly painless. But, like I said, run malware and AV scans before performing the upgrade to mitigate potential issues caused by spyware/virus infections.
