XP setup defaults to domain

I just finished my Win 7 overview and found one program that was too old to work with W7 so I reinstalled XP pro SP2 using my OEM disc. I noticed that it skipped some key steps when installing like whether or not I wanted a domain or workgroup and sure enough when I try to logon I get a "domain doesn't exist or is disconnected" message box. I pressed control-alt-delete twice and there is no combo box with a domain listed and I am unable to logon as anything.
Is there a way to switch to workgroup without a domain or should I download a trial version of Win Serv and create a domain named domain ( I figure it defaults to "domain" just like it defaults to "workgroup"). I should be able to get the basics down on working with win serv but I would like a quicker solution.
If all else fails I will get W7 but that isn't until October and even then I still have to figure out how to get Max 4 to run on W7 since the protection schemes refuse to run on anything past XP.

Update, I tried using [a password reset utility] to change my localAdmin settings but no luck. I enabled Guest and it didn't show up on the welcome screen and made sure all passwords were blank.
I have considered using my Win XP home edition, but I wanted to use those to upgrade to Win 7 and have my XP pro for running 3D Studio Max. I know about VM but I wonder if it will impact my overall performance.

Is the windows CD you are using an actual Retail/OEM Microsoft CD, or is it a burned copy?

Update: Yes, Both CDs I am using were bought from New Egg. I just installed XP Home using a license I was saving for a rainy day and It had the same install problems as the Pro edition. No problem I thought it couldn't possibly default to a domain network. I ate my words as soon as my jaw dropped as the same "cannot contact domain or domain doesn't exist" message came up for XP home.
My next plan is to install a bare metal hypervisor to see if the extra layer between my hardware and software will make any difference.

I give up, I will un-retire my P4 for XP duty and run W7 on the machine. I imagine I will get the same performance from a 3 Ghz P4 compared to my low end C2D running in virtual XP mode on top of W7.

Your description has me confused. Logging on to what? The Windows account or some network?? You should always have an Admin account, and then you go into the Account Management and add or configure other accounts.
Domain sounds like a network setting.....
