windows xp corruption

My dell desktop has been hit by a perfect storm. First problem is that my optical drive does not work and then my OS stop working. Before loading Windows XP up an error appears that states that:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. "

But of course I can not do that because my optical does not work. What can I do?

find an optical that does work, and then do the repair.

Turn the computer off, remove the bad optical drive, install the new one (make sure it's jumpered correctly if ide), and then turn on the computer with the windows disc inside the drive and do a repair.

You'd want to install a new optical aka CD drive with the pc turned off

That particular error is almost always caused by a hard drive that is dying - bad sectors. Press F12 on startup and run Dell diagnostics.
