Driver Problem
Recently purchased a new hard drive and installed windows(XP Pro). everything was good, had two partitions, windows installed.
But when i went to install my motherboard drivers(asus p5k), the Ethernet driver(attansic) wouldn't install. It just starts moving in slow motion and just almost freezes before finishing installing. If i then try to update driver in deceive manager it will tell me access is denied. I've tried running the driver from my Motherboard CD and also downloading an updated version online, but both have the same problems. If I run in safe mode, i can install the driver from the cd but when i restart windows, it will not load, pretty much freezing/slow motion at the windows xp loading screen. so then i have to select load with last known settings and I'm back where I started. I've also re-installed windows, and the same stuff is happening. the only thing i've done different from the last time i set-up my pc is, I partitioned my drive, and I just can't see that being the problem. I am SO frustrated at this, its unbelievable. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

Try uninstalling the driver, and then reinstalling the one you got from online.
Before the reinstall of windows, were you able to connect to a network or get online? Does it say anything when you plug a network cable in now? Do you have the port enabled in bios?

Before installing this new HD, everything worked great on my old one. Installed, got online fine.
Well anyway, I managed to get the driver installed, and in the process of doing windows updates, my computer froze. After a reboot, I get an unknown drive error, giving me only the option to reboot. The drive can be seen on the pc and now it won't let me format it. I assume I'm screwed at this point and will have to mail the drive back and wait 2 weeks to get another one. |

What is the exact error message?
When do you get this, right after post? Have you checked the connections? What brand hard drive is it? Why did you change the original hard drive? |

the error message is
"An unknown error has occured Press Alt + Ctrl + Dtl to Reboot" yeah it happens right after post. I tried formatting with the windows cd again, but won't allow it to the error or what have you. Yeah I've checked the connections, everything is good, the pc recognizes the drive, i just cant do anything with it. It's a SEAGATE ST3500418AS 500 GB. Changing the original drive because its smaller and I was going to just it as a slave drive to keep my original data. |

What OS did you have before loading the XP Pro? What does it do if you remove the new drive and just run the old one? It's either the new OS is coausing your problem or the new drive is. Afterall your rig was working fine before you did the upgrade, right?

Currently my computer seems to run fine, but restarting is a problem, it tends to go in slow motion/freeze at the xp loading screen most of the time if i reboot for any reason which is another reason why i decided to do a fresh install. Tried to do some research, updating graphics drivers, closing some unneeded programs from start-up but the same problem still occurs and only seems to finally load by chance.
I have my old drive in right now(on the pc right now actually), and the os finally booted after a few tries. I've been running XP Pro all along. |
