Win 98 Bootup Problem

No posts in 30 days; looks like I'm the last of a dying breed.

When computer is started it wants to boot from the floppy. I can go to the BIOS and set the HDD as first boot device and machine starts fine. After shut down and restart, it reverts back to the floppy as the first boot device. Any suggestions?

When you do get it to start is the time and date correct?
Has the motherboard battery failed?
Have you tried disconnecting the floppy drive?

The date is right but the time is wrong. Don't know about the battery although a bad battery had occured to me. and haven't tried disconnecting the floppy.

If the battery was so bad that you were losing the BIOS settings the time and date would be wrong.
Try pulling the plug on the floppy, floppy drives don't last long and they can cause some weird faults.

Disconnecting the floppy seems to have fixed it.
Thank you very much for your quick responses.

Your not on your own.
I have a machine coming in on Saturday afternoon that I have been keeping going on a song and a prayer for years, actually thats not quite true, the program "Famis" is what I have been keeping going for years, as few years ago I had a mint condition machine capable of running W98 with an ME upgrade come in as a trade in.
Any who... I digress
The machine in question must run W98 or similar because of the Famis program. Famis is an old DOS based app and we no longer have the install disks to see if we can get it to run in XP with compatibility mode. The secretary keeps forgetting to backup the Famis data file so I need to install an app or create a scheduled task that can backup the data file to an external device.

still a need for the forum.

In the process of doing a hardware conversion on 4 machines running under DOS 5.0 and the last machine I was on today was a reload of 98SE to a dual boot DOS622/SE.

So no, you are not the last of a dying breed. We may be getting gray, but not dead yet.

Agree on the suggestion about it being a battery problem.

As it turns out I was wrong about floppy removal fixing my problem What was needed was a new battery. All is well now. Thanks again to all who responded.
