well it`s gone from bad to worse, all I can get now is a black screen with a flashing pong paddle in the corner. This computer had XP on it and I`m trying to re-install W98 on it.It was working yesterday but it had "issues".I`ve been trying to format the hdd but it has a primary partition that I cannot delete{I`ve tried}, is there someway I can wipe the whole thing clean and start over, there`s nothing on it that I want, I would be thrilled with W98...

Get the ultimatebootcd and use a zero fill on the drive. Killdisk would be the quickest way to go.

I haven`t acquired the smarts to use my cd burner yet and I`ve downloaded 45 copies of 98bootdisks (small measure of hyperbole here) and nothings worked, I have not a clue how to even start something in the a drive,,I have tried to screw this up and cannot manage THAT...I did get the message "missing os" but since then I now have windows being set up as i type,,,,,so maybe........I`m posting from the "BLACK BEASTIE" and have the other desktop in my lap..I have the Windows 98 Setup screen on the doorstop now...I guess it wouldn`t hurt to HIT continue????

I think I read somewhere that I should use a different directory to install Windows or do I want the C:\windows that is already chosen for me?.....

On a "fresh" install, if the old windows hasn't been formatted to "clear the partition, it will install to C:/Windows1, leaving the old data there. Not a good idea unless you want it that way....

One of the early steps in 98 install is to create an emergency boot disk. Let it create one then reboot your machine with the floppy and use fdisk to kill the XP partition then create a primary dos partition.

This will give you a clean install when you run setup again.

I can`t figure out how to use it, can`t see my drives, boot asks for second cd`s that i`ve NEVER had..is this computer hell?
