Boom Slow network access

Hi all

I've recently started work at a new office, and the brand spanking new PC I've been assigned is giving me headaches. Half the time, I have no complaints with it and it works fine. The other half of the time, network access is slow, and I mean any network access.

If I try load a webpage, it takes up to 2 minutes to get the request out and then the page instantly loads, if it doesn't time out. If I try to browse a network share, it takes up to 2 minutes to show up, and every folder I try access takes a further amount of time to open. Basically anything network-related randomly takes a dive during the day, and sometimes for hours. And then it just disappears, and network access if perfectly normal.

I thought maybe it was something wrong with how they prepared my PC. Reformatted, installed the basics, and the problem continues. Is this a hardware problem? Or is some sort of software causing the blockage?

If you need any specific details on our network, let me know. It's really a basic P2P network, with a Linux server acting as a gateway (no proxy set up) connected to a Cisco modem router.

Please help me, as it's really frustrating to work with. If it's a hardware problem, we'd prefer to give it back to our suppliers. I'm the only one on the network having these problems.

And before anyone asks, I don't think this has anything to do with over-utilization of the network. There are only 20 PC's on the network on two separate switches, and I'm one of two computers using the 1gbps link. And I have this problem after hours when everyone has gone home.
