XP change user problem

First XP Pro would freeze and go to blank screen every time we changed partitions thru either 'logoff' or 'change user' - and had to restart - - then dies completely - XP would not start - it had disappeared entirely - XP Pro would not reinstall - had to install XP Home - no trace of anything that was on pc with XP Pro - - now XP Home is doing the same thing - may work partially or freeze to blank screen when changing user - restart sometimes gives totally pixellated screen and I must power down. To function now we start up and shut down for each user - a real pain.
Any ideas??

Pretty good indication of hardware failure. Either memory or video card if I had to guess. Download, burn and run MEMTEST to check for RAM failures.

Are you able to boot your computer in safe mode?
If you are then definitely it is a hardware issue as Killuminate has said.

Did you install any hardware device or the hardware driver before you started to face
this problem? Just go for a memory test as he said and then come back to this thread.
