winxp update issue

issue: winxp downloads updates; installs but then indicates updates did not install?

discussion: bought an older dell inspiron 5000e(PIII-850/512 ram/20gbhdd) which will download xp updates; go thru the install procdedure-but then indicates updates were not installed?

what may be the cause/cure? shld i reinstall xp?

also---when insert usb device into usb(1) port-installation wizard appears..thus...seems not to have the usb drivers)??..suspect a file is missing (needed to work the usb dvices)??--wld this file be available o the dell website?

If you don't have any files on it to speak of, I'd wipe it and reinstall from scratch. I recommend you use a XP CD that has at least SP2 already incorporated, and *ANY* Dell-branded XP recovery CD will work.
