Hi Gang
This is a on going problem that I have messed with for several weeks now. I am trying to install a outlook 2007 on my XP home computer, and I have tried every thing I can possible think of. it goes into the install and stops about a little ways in and says encountered an error during setup, and that is it. No error message out side of that, nothing to shoot at. I have cleaned out any previous version of outlook in the add and remove, and the registry. I have read that this can happen if there is any trace of a previous version. So I have made sure there are no traces what so ever. So give me anything you can think of no matter how far fetched it way sound. I have tried installing it numerous times, with diff options, and I even tried installing the trial version, and it did the same thing. If it would only give me an error that would tell me some thing, then I would start digging for it, but it does not do this. Just says it error ed during setup. Thanx...Gunny

Hi EZY
Hey here we are again, I hope you as good at solving this one as you were the last time. That was great. Ya my XP is pretty up to date, I have been using it for a long time and I am pretty good at keeping it clean and running right. I have never had a problem like this at installing any thing. I am sure it has a few things that are not right with it after using it for so long, but on the whole it moves along real good, and it gets checked for malware, and viruses, etc regularly. I think the main thing that bugs me is it does not give why it has stopped installing, not even a clue, and it stops at the same point every time. I can hear the DVD drive slow down and the hour glass jumps a few times and up pops this message box, saying it has stopped. And I have tried two diff DVD drives too. I have the SP 1, 2 ,3, and all the updates are there.Very good at doing that too. And having it do the same thing with the Trial use Office version really floored me. This is a genuine copy of Office 2007, no upgrade, has the registration # and all. Well my hat will be off to you if you can solve this one. Would even treat you to lunch if we was located closer to each other. Thanx and take care....Gunny Last edited by redvette; 11-05-2009 at 11:04 AM. |

So do you have the entier Office cd and you're only tring to install Outlook? If so, have you tried to install the whole thing?
Do you have an previous version of Office or Outlook installed? Do you still have Outlook Express installed and it works ok. Righ click on My Computer->MANAGE->look though Even Viewer for references to failed install... Don't worry about lunch - send cash

Hi EZY
So you would like cash do ya, well at this point I am even up for that. :-) In answer to your questions. Yes it is the entire Office version, let me correct that as my wife pointed out to me, I am having trouble installing Office 2007. I call it Outlook all the time because that is what I use most of the time, but no it is the complete Office 2007 version. I have tried installing the complete thing and just parts, get the same results with any way I have tried to install. Each time I attempt to install I search every where to make sure there are no left over pieces left from a previous attempt to install. I understand this will cause a problem so I do my best to uninstall everything. No I do not have Outlook Express installed. And I will see what you suggestion willl reveal, and get back to you. Thanx....Gunny |

hmmmmm. I couldn't say about 2007 - but all versions of Outlook up to 2007 needed/you MUST have OE on the machine....Outlook uses some of OE's files.
Outlook Express is actually pretty hard to get rid of...Do you specifically remember getting rid of it? In theory - it'd be nice to see something in Event Viewer that might shed some like. Something like "Gunny - go to happy hour and work on this tomorrow." Or "Office installed failed due to error #xxxxxx" would really be nice. |

HI EZY
Are you saying I should install OE if I don't have it.? I don't remember ever having OE, so not clear on if I uninstalled it. I know I have never used it. I will have to do some thinking about this, a long long time ago I do remember some thing about OE, but not clear what it was. I know what I have read about it saying it was not very good, being buggy , etc. I will look and do some searching to see if it is on my computer. You can say that again this is like trying to shoot a gun with out any bullets, they are not playing fair. 99 out of a 100 times you get some sort of error message, not this time. I have even tried doing the repair on a install of XP, thinking it might be missing a file or DLL or some thing, but that did not do it either. You would think a good version of Outlook 2007 would have its own files and not depend on OE for any. What would a person do if they never had OE.? Ok so say that could have happened, I deleted OE at some time, now what.? There will not be any Happy hour until this is solved. :-) Thanx....Gunny |

Hi EZY
Well the second shift never did kick in, too much happy hour I bet. Well what has happened since our last posting is this. Just to eliminate one more thing I cleaned up another SATA HD and installed my XP on it, the install went smooth, and when that was done I did all the usual things first, SP 1, 2, 3, etc, then I installed the Office 2007 and it went on like a charm. So all this tells me is the problem is not with the program, it has to be some thing in my old XP. And I am after talking to a lot of people about the problem I think it stems from a while back I have some Trojan's get into my system, they were removed but I think they did some damage that I cannot find or any of the Virus protection programs I have, can find either. So I will just have to face the fact of never being able to correct this problem. I cannot say how mad this makes me, I pride myself in being able to fix things, and this just goes against my grain. Thanx EZY you was a big help, even if we could not nail it down. Thanx and take care.....Gunny |

Gunny, I *think* we have had this conversation before..........
When all else fails, nuke and pave. Let me add to that: ANY TIME you pick up a trojan, virus, or spyware, BE PREPARED to nuke and pave. When you have a nice clean system with everything installed and operating properly, MAKE AN IMAGE of it and keep it updated. |

Nuke and Pave can be painful...But it gets worse when you're a few hours into trying to solve a problem and you realize that you could alomost be done with N&P...
And if you make an image right now...the next time it'll only take a couple minutes to swap out drives. |

In order to be able to simply swap out drives, you would have to have a clone, not an image. With an image, you boot with the CD and restore the image. This is simple with a single boot computer (no multiple operating systems).

GLC and EZY
Thank you both for all your info. I think I understand what you are saying about the image and the cloning, and GLC I am sure we have talked about this before. My efforts to fix this was not only to save doing what you both suggested but to find out what was causing this to happen. I know you both have done exactly what I have been doing, it is just our nature to want to solve things, not take the easy way out you might say. Not that the other choice is easy but for sure quicker. But I understand what you both are saying I could literally spend months trying to figure this out. And spending all that time for what simply to satisfy my ego.? And there is always the fact that I might never solve it. Even my little pea brain figured that one out. Well if you know of any good articles that talk about cloning and imagining, pass them along. Thanx and take care.....Gunny |

That will work fine with XP, but not Vista or 7. If you use the image function, it will save a compressed image of the whole partition as a single file to wherever you want on another partition or drive, internal or external. This image will be restorable by booting with the CD.
To TEST it, create an image. Then pull the drive and replace it with a spare drive and do a restore. |
