XP to Win7: HD partition

So, I'm gonna take the plunge and try Windows 7 on my 7 year old XPpro machine. I may have some probs with sound card, but I'll try to see what happens. Concern is my HD. I currently have it partitioned into 2 sections: 1 for XP & apps with other for documents. I know Win 7 needs more space and so, can I increase size of C:// w/o hurting the documents on the D:// partition? I have a copy of Partition Magic, but haven't used it in some time so I am not up to speed with what I can do.

Yes, In theory - you can increase the size of the C drive...But, as a really smart computer user you're going to backup your important files first...so it really doesn't matter if you trash everything on the drive

If it's 7 years old, it may not have the horsepower to run Windows 7 well - what are the specs?

I ran the Win 7 check and all except the sound & video cards passed muster, but further down in the analysis, I was warned that 'perhaps' my OEM sound/video may be a problem. I have a Dell 4600 w/ Pentium 4 processor at 3GHz with 3 GB ram. I usually do a clean reinstall of my XPpro every 6-9 months as I find this is the only way I get back the speed and app performace. I already have a Win 7 upgrade disk from my laptop and since I will be retiring the old Dell in a couple of months, why not see if I can have some more fun before then.

what soundcard is that? does the dell have onboard sound? if so use that instead. if not is easy to buy a new soundcard, same as video card, non gamer card is like $40 and soundcard is like $30 or less

I just checked at support.dell.com - and the only OS they have drivers for that machine for is XP. I'd advise against installing Win 7.
