Using a Windows Product Key?

I got a used Dell e310. I just need to put in a hardrive. I'm thinking of using it as a media center. I may go ubuntu but the tower still has the XP Media Center product key sticker on it. Can I get a disc from Microsoft and use that key?

Any OEM copy of XP MC will work with that key. Only headache with a MC install is the inability to Slipstream in the Service Packs. MC consists of 2 cd's and usually will have SP2.

Dell may sell you a replacement set of CD's for less than buying an OS elsewhere.

if you going to buy replacement OS disc, you might as well get microsoft Technet subscription, once you join the membership, you can downloadl the os images plus latest os they offer.

Technet is quite costly just to get one copy of an OS.

I called dell and they only offer repayment discs to in warranty machines. Plus since I got the PC used I don't know the previous owners name to transfer ownership to myself. I wanted to go the legit route but I'm sure I can get it by other means.

I know they arms and legs, but if you going to get replacement other than from dell, for that little more on spending, you can also get the office, ms server, other os beside the one you getting and is for the year. and any new product they release you able to get it as well. but is only for people who in the tech role tho.
