Hi All:
Just started today, all my pictures, write files in Explorer are now showing the "File Extention" Before, they only showed the name that I had given them. Where do I go to set it back to where it was ( The way I liked it ).

Bill, you may like it that way, but I recommend that people show all extensions. It's a lot safer that way, it helps protect you from opening malware if you know for sure what you are dealing with.
I know I'm being cheeky here, but my belief is if people want a totally icon-based system, they should buy a Mac. |

Hi glc:
I'm sure your 100% right on, but old habits are hard to change, I like seeing just the name I've given it, and I try to keep it short enough so that the whole name shows (not cut off or part of it hidden). And that added file extention messed up all the names of all my files. Anyway, thanks for the input, it's always appreciated ! |

Another vote for not hiding attachments - and I mention this again to emphasize the point .. the reason why this whole trend of easy email malware started was because people decided to go with the Microsoft way of hiding attachments .. remember that kournikova.jpg showed up as the name .. when in fact the actual file was kournikova.jpg.vbs
Like GLC said, if you want to get with best computing practices, try to get away from looking at things the "pretty" way and look at files for what they are .. it's a habit that will pay dividends in a platform that is attacked so much. The operating system, from the ground up, is designed to look less at security ramifications but to run programs based on the extensions ... just because Microsoft tried to pretty it up, doesnt mean that it's a good idea to hide it. |

Exactly, and this practice began with Windows 95.

Thanks Statica and glc, I'll make an attempt to get used to seeing the file extentions.
Thanks again, |
