register older version of XP

Here's my problem. I picked up an older HP laptop at a yard sale. The HD had been reformated and the included install CDs can't be read, but I was able to use an older DELL XP install disk to install XPhome. My XP is not being used on any other computer in that they have been upgraded to Win 7. I tried to register the computer, but the numbers were not accepted by MS while trying a phone register. I wanted to give the laptop to my grandmom so she could email and begin to learn to surf the web. Any suggestions?

I since have contacted my neighbor who sold me the HP and discovered that the wrong batch of CDs were put in the laptop bag. Luckily they still have them and I think that will solve my problem.
