XP Home SP2 will not load

Someone Please help me keep my remaining hair!
I cannot get XP Service Pack 2 to load. Once the updater starts to check for the correct amount of disk space the updater hangs.
I have tried everything I can think of. I have done backsteps with system restore, Used troubleshooting files for the registry, checked for spyware/malware, used a number of registry repair tools, etc. I have even done an XP repair, but without good results.
Another thing is that if I try to do almost anything, task manager shows my resources 100% used up. I have used msconfig to try to improve the situation but that doesn't help either.
I am not new to computers, I have three degrees in IT but this has got me absolutely stumped.
Thanks in advance for giving this some thought, at this point I would appreciate ANY suggestions. Doc

If you are trying to install SP2 on a XP system with no service packs, you should install SP1a first, then skip SP2 and go right to SP3.

Nope, already tried that. I had no trouble loading SP1a. Then tried to load 3. It does the same thing, hangs when checking disk space.

Try using Autostreamer to create a new XP disk with SP3 integrated. Here's a link on how to use Autostreamer and within the instructions is the link to download it. Once you have created your XP SP3 disk, do a repair install of your existing system. You'll need to make sure you are using an OEM version of your XP disk and that you have the Product Key sticker on the case. If no Product Keys sticker, use The Magical Jelly bean to find out what your key is BEFORE you do the repair install. We have a "how to" do a repair install sticky thread in our Tips area.

Thank you so much Panama! Autostreamer worked famously. I had never even heard of it but it took little effort and now I am most elated to have SP3 installed and everything else falling into place. Thank you ever so much for your help.
