Cannot put pc on standby

Installed XP in '05 in this pc I built and after all these years it has suddenly started hanging at shutting down to standby. The hanging is at the point where it says Windows is shutting down... what can I do to fix this problem? Help!

WinXP home; sp 3
2.26GHz
2GB Ram

If I were you I would check the event logs on the system both Application and System. If there is a service or background app that wont stop or close then that explains the issue.

To access the Event Viewer go to Start > Run > eventvwr.msc

Does this issue only happen when trying to go to standby or at shutdown/restart too?

If it happens at shutdown too try booting into safe mode and attempting to shut down - this will isolate any basic Windows services causing the issue and therefore mean that anything to do with the core/important components on your OS is more unlikely and it is related to some third-party software you have going in the background.

Thanks much, but, turns out the problem was the mouse. After hanging at standby, my pc began freezing to the point I bought a new pc........... that's when I discovered all the problems were due to the mouse! Next time I'll check on that before doing anything else. Old pc goes to standby without hanging and no more freezing.
