PC seems to think after every click for ages

Our PC which is running XP SP 3 is very lethargic. The browser keeps having problems loading web pages and giving a diagnostic error. Our laptop which runs Vista and is on the same broadband connect has no problems loading web pages.
AVG was swamping the CPU but I uninstalled it and installed the lates free one and that resolved that.
But it's not just IE or now even Firefox stuttering.
I cannot understand why the PC takes so long to react to opening software or windows explorer etc.
It's a tad elderly the PC being a P4 with 3Gb of RAM and 3GHz processor, but it's only recently had this problem of stalling.
What should I investigate to see what's causing this?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

It might be time for a nuke and pave.

You could run hard drive and ram diagnostics to try to rule out a hardware issue.

Thanks for the steer. Where'd I find those diagnostic tools. I don't see them under administrative tools. Should I be using third party ones? If so which free ones would be best?

Hello again. I've done the memory test - passed, as did the drives. The main problem is the internet. I keep getting "Internet Explorer cannot display this web page - Diagnose Connection problems" error page. This happens on IE as well as Firefox, though more on IE. It's often when filling in forms but can be on non-secure pages also. Is this a browser problems? Spyware? I've AVG running so there shouldn't be a virus and Zone. I get no problems with laptop running Vista. PC is running XP.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Oh dear. Do you mean wipe the partition and reinstall XP?

I guess using an image would just reinstate the problem. Is there any way that wouldn't involve completely reinstalling everything preferences, bookmarks et al?

I might just stump up for Windows 7.
