Manual update
When I try to do a manual Windows Update, I get this message.
THIS SITE CAN NOT CONTINUE BECAUSE ONE OR MORE OF THESE WINDOWS SERVICES IS NOT RUNNING. It lists three items. Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and Event log. It then tells me to go to Start / Run, and type SERVICES.MSC It then lists a bunch of services. I follow the directions and make sure that Automatic Updates is automatic, and started. I make sure that BITS is started and set to Manual, and that Event log is started and set to automatic. (Per the instructions). I click apply etc. But when I close the window and come back in, the Automatic Updates is DISABLED again. ???? I do not see any place to also click "OK". I ran AVG and found no viruses, and CCleaner etc. Any suggestions, Please.

Try setting the three services to AUTO and then reboot the pc. |

Have you scanned for malware on that pc? Some infections will disable Automatic Updates. I'd run Malwarebytes in Safe mode with Networking (make sure you update it first) just to make sure you have a clean system.

EzyStvy---The OS is XP Home. I changed everything to Automatic and this time I did not close out the services.msc box, I just minimized it. I then tried the download and still no luck. I checked the Automatic Update item to see if it changed back to Disabled, but it did not this time, but I was still unable to download anything from the Windows Update site.
Panama Red-----I tried downloading Malwarebytes---no luck. After it appeared to download the file, it went to update etc. and then I got the message that UNABLE TO EXECUTE FILE C:\PROGRAM FILE\MALWAREBYTES'ANTIMALWARE\MBAM.EXE The system can not find the file etc. I tried two different sites, no luck. I then downloaded the program onto a flash drive on another computer, and then tried to install the program off the flash drive..no luck. Got the same message. It apperas that the computer is infected...right. any other suggestions. |

Update...I noticed a file called NUSOYETA.DLL in the startup items when you go to msconfig.
I Googled it and it apperas to be a virus. Now I need to get rid of that I guess. I unchecked the item in the startup items, but it came back after the reboot. |

In safe mode? This is different than a normal boot.
To get to safe mode, start up the computer and just keep tapping F8 until you see a selection menu. On that menu, select "safe mode". Click "yes" on the prompt that appears (confirming that you want to work in safe mode) Then try installing/running malwarebytes.

Safe Mode With Networking should let you download it, install it, and update it.

glc...I tried two more times. At the end of the install when it looks for the updates and to start, it tells me it can't find that MBAM.EXE file. I then downloaded malwarebytes to a flash drive on my other computer. Then I tried to install it on the infected computer while still in safe mode...same result. It could not find that file. I then deleted AVG, and installed AVAST antivirus. At the end of the scan which took about 90 minutes, it told me it found that virus, and I think it said it was in memory or the boot section, and then asked if I wanted to restart the computer that it would scan at startup. I said yes, and restarted per its instructions. After about an hour, it was only 1% complete, so I went to bed. Maybe I will delete AVAST and try AVIRA. Any other suggestions on how to remove this virus ? Many thanks, Mike

FIXED----I figured out why I could not fully install Malwarebytes. Near the end of the install, two blocks were checked. One to FINISH, and one to CHECK FOR UPDATES. Since they were both checked by default, I thought it was OK, and just checked next or whatever. The last time when I tried again, when it came to that point, I UN-CHECKED UPDATE, and then I guess the program finally fully installed. All is well. I did the quick scan, and then I did the update. It found several more trojans and delted them. Now I CAN get the updates from the MICROSOFT UPDATE site. Many thanks !! Mike
