conclusion ?

I have a older PC on my hm network.
A 800MHz Plll
512MBR
XP pro serv pk 3
latest updates etc...
Here is the story, I reformatted it about a yr ago. I don't use it often at all.
I had originally loaded the same OS and turned off the updates and "never" did any service pk's or anything like wise. It ran like a gem up until last yr. And this from the time XP came out (2000?). It just finally craped out. After eight yrs.
So, new load, and hardly any software loaded. No Office or games etc.. Some app's like SpyBot, and Malwarebutes, and Bit Defender total security.
And auto update is on, and it is current.
It runs like crap! CPU is at 100% just about all the time. The memory seems to be OK.
I ck it with a app called Memory Booster Gold, which I have used for awhile without trouble and found it to be accurate by comparing it with Task Manager and performance manager.

There are only a couple app loading at startup.
The services are minimal. I even shut off the print spooler.

CONCLUSION IS:
Its the service packs and hot fixes and updates! They are why its so slooooow.
There is nothing else.

If anyone took the time to read this, pls weigh in. OK? If there is another reason that seems likely, I would like to know.

I've defraged, ran all the spy stuff and Error checking etc...
And keep in mind, its a new load!

Thanks
B

Bit Defender might be contributing to the issue...it's an active scanner. Uninstall it and see what happens.

Uninstall all your security software and see what happens. Then put it back on selectively. On an old machine like that, you may want to use something lighter. I usually put Avast on old machines, and anything else is used strictly as a manual scanner.

or you might consider Linux. I run an older P3 866 loaded with Mint.

it is running "much" faster without BD.

I still think it runs a little slow, but this improvement makes it seem like lightning compared to what it was.
Thanks
