Weird problem with harddrive contents... HELP!

What next to drive me batty! Please help if possible. Not sure I can explain it adequately. I have XP Home, installed IE8 couple weeks ago. This afternoon was looking at program files on harddrive after clicking on launching icon. When I finished, it went back, but, also left a copy on the taskbar which shows no way to delete. When looking at it, the dll cache also runs alongside. Does this make sense? I shut down and rebooted to no avail. What to do? What to do?
