Hey, y'all. I just recently found this site and man, am I glad I did. I've just encountered a problem with XP on a friend's computer that I've never had to deal with before and I'm thinking you guys could really help.
So I got this wonderful little message the other day: We apologize for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. If your computer stops responding, restarted unexpected, or ... last known good configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If a previous startup attempt was interupted due to a power failure... Start Windows Normally. Safe mode Safe mode (networking) Safe mode (command prompt) Last Known configuration Start Windows Normally I ran CHKDISK (which didn't work) and restored the OS using the Windows XP Installation disk. After that, everything booted correctly and the files were where they should have been. Problem solved, right? Nooope. Today, I clicked on the internet dial-up icon and while the box came up, I couldn't connect. (I'd hit the button to connect, that is, and nothing happened.) Admittedly, I'm a bit of a novice in the area of computer repair at this point, so I was unsure of where to go from there. Any suggestions? |

You probably need to reinstall some drivers. Check device manager, I'm betting your modem is missing or flagged. Then, you may have to recreate the dialup connection.
By the way, it's CHKDSK, not CHKDISK. |
