Tuesday's security updates from Microsoft have crippled Windows XP PCs with the notorious Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), users have reported on the company's support forum.

To regain control of their PCs, users were told to boot from their Windows XP installation disc, launch the Recovery Console and enter a series of commands.

The problem is caused by KB977165, see Restart issues after installing MS10-015. It's not universal, but some users do report problems.

Here is how to fix:
  • Boot from your Windows XP CD and start the recovery console.
  • You may need to press F6 while the Recovery Console loads in order to load SATA drivers; these can be found on your motherboard CD (or downloaded from the manufacturer web site).
  • If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
  • When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
  • Type: CD $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst (press ENTER)
  • Type: BATCH spuninst.txt (press ENTER)
  • Type: exit (press ENTER)
