large amount of page file usage

Hi, recently my page file usage has gone through the roof, at idle it creeps up to 3gb over about an hour or so. When I kill the offending svchost.exe (local service) the page file drops to 1.4 gb or less. Thing is i have page file disabled so shouldn't it be minimal at best?

my specs:
amd athlon 64 x2 3.2ghz 6400+
asus m2n32-sli deluxe mb
4 gigs ram
nvidia 2, 7950 gt 512mb sli
wix xp 32bit home w/sp3

i've attached a hijackthis! log with the pagefile at 1gb. I'll post again when it reaches 3gb.

thank you.

Have you done thorough scans for viruses and malware with multiple scanners?

yes I scanned with Bit Defender (which for some reason hung during scanning) and Avira which was equally useless, now i have PC Tools and Threatfire which seem to do a good job, according to them the system is clean.

I have now re-installed windows and the page file keeps growing in excess of 3 gb, with the one local service host nearly 2 gb. Is there a service log I can run to see what this service host is? At my wits end!

admin, can you close this thread, I need to start a new one with more accurate information and heading. It turns out the page file has nothing to do with the issue. thanks.

unusually large svchost.exe

anyone know why a svchost.exe (local service) would slowly expand to nearly 2 gb in size? This is on a fresh install of xp home 32bit sp3 with no virus detected by by 3 different a.v./malware programs.

To view the list of services that are running in Svchost:

Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type CMD, and then press ENTER.
Type Tasklist /SVC, and then press ENTER.

Threads merged with updated topic. It's best to keep everything concerning an issue in one thread, we don't close and bury threads here.

Exactly what did you install after installing XP? What exact type of XP installation media did you use? Please be specific and detailed, include all drivers, updates, and software. I think you may see where I'm going here. It may be very tedious and time consuming, but you may need to get another fresh start and monitor it after each and every installation item to see which one is driving it nuts.
