Safe Mode only after SP2

I bought an old HP a250n from a thrift shop recently which had a password protected admin account and would only boot into safe mode. I decided to reformat the drive and install a fresh copy of XP service pack 1. the install was textbook and the computer functioned flawlessly for several days until I updated to SP2 after which it will not boot normally. I even upgraded from 2 to 3 (I have both SP's on a disc) and still no luck. How should I go about diagnosing the problem?

My first thought was to replace the hard drive and see if the issue remains but I figured I'd bounce this off of you guys before I waste time if there is something simpler to try first.

Ok, threw in another HDD, installed XP - no problems, installed SP2 - no boot. Safe mode only. Reset CMOS?

Have you checked for a bios update?

Yes and I just downloaded it to a flash drive. My question is: Should I run it now while the machine is at SP2 in safe mode or should I nuke and pave again to SP1 and then run the update? I'd hate to 'brick' the MB if that is even possible...

This is a BIOS update for the P4SD-LA motherboard.

I would nuke and pave just out of safety reasons.

Have you checked the event logs? Do you see any errors?

After my most recent attempt to install SP3, upon restart, the monitor would not turn on at all. I pulled the graphics card and substituted it for a known good one and still the same problem. Removed that card and connected to the onboard graphics and bingo - full boot on SP3. Good enough for me!
