slow computer

issue: very slow computer
equipment: IBM thinkpad X24 (P3-1.1 ghz/640 ram)

discussioin: task manager shows one of the (4) svchost.exe drawing over 90% cpu power at idle-and the hdd is thrashing almost continuosly. i have elimanted many "background" programs frm running at startup(via msconfig). virus checked shows "clean" system.

suggestions!!!

i removed the offending svchost.exe only to find the browser wld not "browse"("cant disaply websit5e message).

tx

You may want to consider doing a clean install.

Hi old-timer,

If the hard disc is busy all the time, is it possible that some RAM has died and the system is having to page-out a lot of stuff?

HTH

I have Windows XP running on a dual 2, 32 bit processor with 4GB of memory. I found svchost.exe system using 40 to 50% CPU time. I downloaded the critical update for my HP OfficeJetPro L7680 AllInOne,dated 4-9-10 and the problem has gone away. You can find the update at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...roduct=2512009
