Can not go to some web sites
New install on XP pro... using either a hot link, or typing a web address in the address bar... can not go to a web site that uses " .org " or " .asp " extension....also html addresses.
Using Internet Explorer. There must be a setting in Privacy , etc that blocks these web sites , but I can not find it. I have reset Security and Privacy to " default " but the problems still exists. Anyone know how to fix? Thanks |

Would it make any sense to reinstall IE so you start with its default settings? As far as I know, its default settings do not block anything.

Using IE 7.0 and XP Pro with Service Pack 3 , and all of the updates ( except IE 8.0)
I will install Firefox and see if it cures it. I was hesitating the change to Firefox, since if I bring over the favorites, it brings over the settings also. I guess I will try Firefox , then remove IE 7.0 , reboot, and re install 7.0 and see if it blocks the sites. That was a new install of IE 7.0 with default settings. The man said he did not make any changes. I was thinking that when the man copied back the " My Documents " , etc, to his clean install, that it brought some changes with it. He said " it never did that on my old machine " ..... Last edited by ROYP123; 04-15-2010 at 03:51 PM. |

I would recommend upgrading to IE8. My cousin had IE7...I upgraded him to IE8, it somehow detected a trojan and removed it during the installation process.

IE7 is fine, M$ is still issuing security updates for it. It's IE6 that has to go.

GLC,
I removed IE7 and the same problem existed when it defaulted to IE6. Tried Firefox , and same problem. We can go to virtually any site, but when we go to a site that uses .org or .aspx , the browser times out. It must not be a setting in IE, but what would cause this? I have Googled the problem, but can not find a way to go to the sites. I will re install IE 7.0 while we try to determine the solution. |

How do you connect to the internet, dsl, adsl, cable, ect? What "firewall" are you using, Windows, Zone Alarm, ect? Are you using a router or a program called OpenDNS?

Connect via cable
Using Windows firewall no router Have run Malwarebytes, CCleaner, SuperAntiSpyware, AVG. The only non-vanilla item is that after building a computer for the man , loading AVG , etc, and his programs, I let him copy/paste the documents saved on his old hard drive. After saving what he wanted, we formatted the old drive and he uses it for extra storage. A few days later he called with the problem of being unable to go to any of his sites that use the .org or aspx. I have retyped the web addresses in manually, with same result. He can go to his bank web site, but after typing in his sign on name, the site uses .aspx and he can not sign on. He can move around the site but not sign on. He forwards me a hot link of a site he can not enter, and I can enter the site using an identical build. It does not look like a re routed web site problem... both Firefox and IE just time out. Thanks |

Have him download this program: http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/secu...ls/blacklight/. It's a free tool that looks for rootkits and post back what the results were please.

Uninstall AVG, then reinstall it WITHOUT the toolbar and Safe Surf (link scanner).

I will remove AVG and re install. I have read your advice in the past re: AVG and I never install the link scanner nor the toolbar.
The man is away for the weekend, but I will run Blacklight looking for rootkits and re install AVG on Monday. Thanks for the ideas. |

Today I ran the Blacklight program searching for rootkits , and removed and re installed AVG, careful to avoid the link scanner. No difference.
Tomorrow I will take a laptop and connect through the cable modem(ethernet) to see if it makes a difference. If not, change the cable modem to usb connection to test. I don't see how it could be a hardware problem, but I have no idea what it is. Most sites connect instantly, but several time out and can not connect , whether I try using favorites, or type in the web address. If that does not work, I will nuke and pave. Will advise |

Try going to this website:
http://www.kernel.org/ If you can't, open a browser and type this in for the address: 204.152.191.37 That's the numeric IP for kernel.org. If it resolves with the IP but not the web address, you may have a DNS problem or your hosts file may be redirecting all "*.org" web addresses to a dead end destination. |

I will try that site next time I go to his computer.
The Hosts file only has the local host 127.0.0.1 showing. I did take my laptop and used his cable modem ethernet connection... and I could go to a .org site that he could not reach. That convinced me it was his computer problem, and I brought his computer back to my place planning to back up the data and write 1's and 0's to the C: drive, and start over. At my place I hooked up a usb wireless connection and tried the sites. Everything worked great and I went to sites he could not reach. That made me CERTAIN it was the ethernet cord or ethernet port. I put in an ethernet card and took it to my dsl modem, but everything worked perfectly through both the built in port and the new pci ethernet card. So I returned it, replaced the ethernet cord and tried it at his place. Just like before. So, I told him to call the cable company and have them check the modem and connections out to the street, and to call me when they were done. I don't have a clue. |
