I have a clean install of XP and I do a lot of gaming. One of the first things I did after installing XP was update the default XP Video Drivers as I've read this causes "Blue Screens" (which I was getting). My problem is that I can't seem to find ONE good Driver for my Video Card (Hercules GeForce 2 Ultra) that is compatible with all my games.
I know it is very tiresome to keep changing drivers just to play a certain game but that is exactly what I'm doing. I know the PROPER way to change drivers is to REMOVE the current drivers in the Device Manager in Safe Mode. I also remove any Nvidia/Hercules files in the Windows /INF folder. But after I remove all the components of the previous driver and reboot, XP automatically reinstalls the default XP driver, I guess as a safety mechanism. I was told that if I just use the "Update Driver" option in the Device Manager, that all I'm doing is just installing some components of one driver over another driver. So by using the "Update Driver" method every time I change drivers, I'm adding files on top of files will give me more problems. Is there any way I could just get XP to use the VGA Display Adaptor until I install the driver that I want to use?? Am I causing more potential problems by changing Video Drivers all the time?? Thanks in advance. |

Have you tried to install the correct driver before you restart the machine, and after you delete the one you dont want.
