I've got two partitions on my 60 gig hdd. I am doing all the partition work with FDISK. The first primary dos partition is 15 gigs. The second extended dos partition is 45 gigs. It has a 45 gig logical dos drive on it. The primary partition is drive C and the logical dos drive is drive E. I copied the entire contents of the C partition to the E partition with a dos utility, so they both now have windows 98 and all of the same files. Now what I want to do is delete the first 15 gig one and install linux there for reasons of my own. What I want to make sure of though, is that I can delete the primary partition and just have an extended partition, and will the logical dos drive turn into drive C? If it won't automatically turn into the C drive, can I manually do it?
Thanx in advance, RenegadeKing

Hi there,
I'm Linux newbie so I can't answer the question with any certainty. But try posting this question in the Alternative Operating Systems forum or on www.linuxquestions.org You'll definately get an informed answer then. Have fun! |

No, FDISK will not allow you to delete the primary partition while an extended partition and logical drives exist. What you would really want to do is use a program such as partition magic where you could resize your partitions as you please.

i'd recommend system commander for partitioning multiple Os's, you can copy partitions, move them, resize them (without reformatting) and make Linux work without using LILO. I've had a system with 6 OS's working together.

Yeah, what Hal said, plus Win9x insists on being on the first Primary partition to boot.Bill G got you again!
But a progy like SystemCommander will replace the MBR with its own so you can boot to any partition. Plus, sizing of partitions on the fly.
