Problems with Windows Update week of 7-12

Got the most recent update to Windows XP Pro on Tuesday (7-13-10). On Thursday (7-15) got Blue screen of Death. System had been running since update received, never rebooted, etc. I turned the machine off by holdin the power button in. Whe I resarted, Windoes XP would not boot up. I booted into diagnstis and ran tests for "OS System won't boot". Passed all tests. So I booted up in SAFE MODE and did a system restore to Monday's date 7-12. System then booted up OK and I turned off the "Automatic Update" for windows updates. So far still OK...

Anyone else having problems since this week's updates? Do we know what is causing it if it is the update. I hate to not have the updates working...

System Dell Dimension 4700 Pent 4 , 3.4 gh, 4gb ram 5 yrs old...This weekend I was going to install a new power supply, as I have been having some other problems (in another thread)

No problem here with my XP box, and I've rebooted once since the update.

NOTE: Dunno if it makes any difference, but I'm running IE7, not IE8.

Did you happen to copy down the error code?

"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" thats what im getting. I installed IE8 and still get the problem. I cannot get my updates, is there a way to get it through firefox? or is IE the only way to get them?

IE is the only way to get Windows updates.

I can get online just fine with firefox, but when i try to get the updates I get " Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" when IE comes up.

Try running malware scans and virus scans. Then a HijackThis log.

Beyond that...you can try uninstalling IE8, see if you get access back with IE7, and if so, upgrade back to IE8 through windows update.

ran malwarebytes and nothing came upran a hijack this log and dont know what to do with it, there is a bunch of things i can "check" to delete but dont want to make things worse :-)

yes i did, and still not connecting to the update site. IE is connecting to the internet tho
