When I cold boot my system, my mouse won’t let me click on anything. I can move the cursor around, but that’s all. Since I can’t use the mouse, the only recourse is to hit the reset button. After it boots the second time the mouse works perfectly until I shut it down normally and restart it. I’ve tried reloading the software and even changed from a Logitech mouse to a Microsoft one with the same results. I’m thinking something in the boot sequence is screwed up but don’t have a clue where to look. Someone suggested that if I wait long enough the mouse will eventually work. I’ve waited as long as 20 minutes with no response.
Any suggestion? This problem began about two or three weeks ago. Both mice that I tried are wireless. Could that have something to do with it? Keyboards were also wireless with no problems. . Using XP Pro SP3, updated.

Try a wired mouse. Try completely uninstalling the mouse drivers and use the default Windows driver. What happens in safe mode?

Just tried a wired mouse/keyboard and it does the same thing. Seems to me that safe mode would do the same as a reset button reboot but I’ll try. What’s the point in using safe mode?
System is very slow to boot now, sometimes takes five minutes. Mallware/virus scans reveal nothing. Can you recommend any of these boot CDs that advertise they can fix window XP problems in 5 minutes? I’m going to switch to Windows 7 when I upgrade my computer to a 64 bit system in September so I don’t want to go through a reinstall of XP at this time. This is my work computer and can’t afford to have it down for more than a few hours. Every time I take it to a repair shop they have to keep it overnight to run “test”. Right now I just leave it running and not worry about booting it up in the morning. Man I hate windows… Thanks for your help. |

Are these mice USB or PS2?
Look in the BIOS and enable "legacy USB devices" if they are USB. Quote:

Safe mode loads Windows in a minimum configuration with bare essentials and no startup programs.
If it's taking that long to boot, either your Windows install is eaten up or you have a hardware issue. |
