shut down during updates
Hi, without looking I was resetting my modem and wireless router and I did so right in the middle of a 1 of 13 updates..It told me not to shut down but I had already gone through the process before seeing this. At any rate, now my computer won't boot properly, I keep getting disable the new hardware or software I installed, I cant' even go to good last know configuration. I really hope I can resolve the issue, this is my business computer and I NEED my harddrive in tact. If any suggestions, would be totally appreciated! thanks in advance, Mary

Can you get it into safe mode? If so, do a system restore.

Yes, I can get to safe mode, why would I want to restore my entire system? I don't want to lose everything. Aren't there other options? Thanks!

You want to do a Windows "System Restore" to an earlier date which is much different then restoring the whole pc.

No, system restore does not do that. It just rolls the system files back to a date and time when it worked. That's EXACTLY what it's designed for - to bail you out when an update or software installation goes wrong.
Start - all programs - accessories - system tools - system restore. Pick a restore point from before you started to do the updates. |

My computer stops at the bios I suppose, I can't go further than that. I don't get to the Start Menu...........There is where it tells me if this is the first time seeing this boot in safe mode ,I do and still nothing, I choose good last known config, and thr process starts all over again. Is there another way to do system restore, should I boot with the OS cd and choose repair? Thanks!

If you can't get it to the start menu in safe mode, you may have to do a Windows repair reinstall. There is a thread in the Tips and Tricks forum that shows you how to do that.
http://www.pcmech.com/forum/tips-tri...ing-xp-cd.html This only works if you have a generic copy of Windows - you can't do this with a name brand recovery CD. |

Cd's are either a standard cd that will work on any pc and other cd's are restore type cd's that are specific to that machine. (so to speak)

It also needs to be the same version (Home, Pro) you originally installed Windows with and you will need to re-enter the key and reactivate it.
