usb and win2k

I have an old Dell Inspiron 3000 with windows 2000 pro installed.
I use it mostly just to look at drawings of projects in my woodshop.
But until now, I've been loading files on a cdrw and bringing them down to the shop from the house.
The Inspiron has a usb port, I tried using a usb thumbdrive...but the os won't recognise it. Is there a driver I can install or is there something else I can do to be able to use a usb drive?

service pack 4 has them:
Updated USB 2.0 Drivers Are Available in Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4)

If you are updated:
1. try a different thumb drive and format it with your pc(it could be the format of the thumb drive)

2.Check BIOS

Look for enable/disable 'legacy usb' sometimes it just says 'usb'

If you have the option to assign an IRQ -try different one (sometimes gives a list)

Thumb drives are *usually* plug and play with win2k. As rwest said, make sure it's got SP4.

thanks rwest and glc,

I went to the Microsoft site to download sp4, but it's a 125mb download. On dial up this equates to several hours. I'm going to see if there is a disc available for sale...

thanks again, I'll post back if I have any more problems after the update..

I'm pretty sure with 2000 you can just right click 'My Computer' and select 'properties' from the drop down menu.

On the fist page smack dab in the middle of the box it'll tell you the most basic specs of your pc and give you the OS version with what servive pack is installed. I think all versions of Windows did this after 98SE. Maybe not Vista-it's its own animal.

It probably depends if you're a 'keyboarder' or 'clicker'.

I use my mouse alot, some folks know all the keyboard shortcuts and prefer them.

Right click on My Computer, then Properties - or go into Control Panel, System, General. If it doesn't say Service Pack 4 there anywhere, you need to go get it. Why not start a download before you go to bed?

Go to the Library & download the file to flash drive(jump drive or usb stick). Take it home and run it from the flash drive.
