WinXP Gateway
Okay, this is concerning the computer I bought the memory for and asked about the updates in this particular forum. I wiped the hard drive and am going to reinstall things from scratch now that the memory is installed (instead of cloning the 20 gig). Instead of having to install the Gatway OS disc that I think was pre-SP1 (which appeared to be a separate one), may I use the one I bought for the system in my sig that has SP3 on it, and use the Gateway license number? That would save quite a bit of updating. Then would go do the Gateway Drivers disc and then the other programs (if needed) if I do so?

Grey area.
Using the strictest guidelines-no; but, if you use the disc you have to load with, and then change the key within the OS to the original one provided by Gateway you are essentially staying within the guidelines provided by Microsoft. When activating, you will not be lying when you answer yes to: "Is this OS only on one PC?"

The Gateway key may or may not work with your CD. Install it with your key, do not activate it, then use the Enchanted Keyfinder to change it.

It wont work, you will have to install with the key that goes with your disk.
Also it will rarely activate online doing it this way. You will have to call MS to get it activated. Remember to change the key first before activating, like GLC said. |

When I updated the computer a few weeks ago (it had never been done)
there were hundreds and it wouldn't put on SP1 because it couldn't do Microsoft Update without it and I couldn't get it on there manually. It was a big headache and I don't think it ever got on there before I put on SP2. That is but one reason why I just nuked the other Hard Drive and want to put down some blacktop.

I started the installation process and went to check on it. It asked for the key (saying it didn't have to be done now, but was recommended.) I tried and it didn't reject it (although I am unsure if it would at that stage or not).
George, would I still need to use your keyfinder, or do I have it made in the shade if it didn't reject it at this point? I presume the purpose of that was to change it after giving it the other one. Would installation have been halted or rejected had the other number been a problem, or could I run into issues down the line?I missed where you had said install it with my own key when I read that at home this morning. I got very little sleep. Last edited by quartet-man; 07-12-2012 at 08:41 AM. |

If you install it with your own key, you really should change it before trying to activate it. If it installed with the Gateway key, you are good to go.

Yeah, it was with the Gateway key and I had no problems whatsoever with activating it online. I am installing many updates nonetheless right now.

That's great Q-man, it used to not work that way; at least it didn't with HP and Compaq keys. I've had to do this type of reinstall many times on our PCs. Sorry for the confusion.

No problem. I know that Dells are tied to the Bios, so that is why I asked. On my old Gateway from 2000, the OS was on a Gateway CD with other things (I think) and finding files on it was tough. They did seem to get wise and put a separate and labeled CD with it in this case.

As far as I know the algorithm they use to make the keys is different for each version/ service pack edition so the key won't activate if it wasn't issued for that version. Dells are even worse as far as being tied to the BIOS. You will have to do what GLC said to get it straightened out and activated.

No need, review the whole thread - it installed and activated with no problem.
