My computer has suddenly slowed down and has frequent hang ups. The only actions I have taken recently have been update of Karspersky to the most recent version and, most recently, update of Java. I can no longer get passwords by clicking some of the password boxes.
I run XP and have done a full scan with Karspesky. Any suggestions??

If diagnostics pass, try system restore.

Before sending in my query I System Restored to three days earlier. I have now system restored 14 days ago and things are much better.
I ran a vulnerability search in Kaspersky and found the following recommended to be fixed:- Java(TM) SE binary file D:\programfiles\java\jre7\bin\java.exe and file D:\programfiles\quicktime\quicktime player.exe Should I remove both programs and then reinstall?? |

There are a number of Java exploits circulating at the moment. You can read about them here:
Malwarebytes articles and dealing with malware

I deleted Java but it made little difference. I ran Hijackthis which suggested deleting the following:
04 HKLM - - \run\quicktimetask\D\programfiles\gtt...... and I forgot to write the rest of the file. The computer is virtually back to normal though pressing enter works faster than clicking. Strange!! |

I know you have already scanned with Kaspersky, but I would try a few other scanners as well like MSE and malwarebytes.

I switched on the computer this morning and it has been running for several hours without a single problem. Strange! It seems several people have had the same problem as I had after updating Kaspersky, this morning there was an update which possibly solved the problem??? Thank you for the help I have received.
Should I down load Java? Happy Scot |

I would only download Java if you absolutely need it. There has been and probably will be future exploits that the bad guys will use. The same goes for Flash.
