hang on shut down

I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop, bought it at a yardsale last summer for $50.
I have no complaints, but it hangs on shut down sometimes for 5 to 10 minutes.
Any suggestions how to diagnose the problem and fix it?

Have you ever reloaded Windows? It may just need a good nuke and pave. Dell makes it easy as long as the utility and recovery partitions are still there, just press Ctrl+F11 on startup.

NOTE that this will wipe your hard drive - back up any files that you need. It will restore the laptop to the condition it was in when first sold.
