fqpissed Can't reload Windows 98 operating system

I have a Gateway G6-266 XL and had to reformat the hard drive. The computer has 128 MB ram, 9 Gig Seagate HD, CD rom and 3.5 Floppy. The whole system runs with an Adaptec Ultrawide SCSI II card. I use the 3.5 start-up disk, then enable use with CD support. Then I try to install Windows 98 I get to the point where about 5% windows data files are being copied I get an " A SERIOUS DISK ERROR HAS OCCURRED WHILE WRITING TO DRIVE C. retry ?" I have this error message show up after I try to reinstall windows even after reformating C, after I run fdisk, delete the partition, repartition, reformat. SCANDISK shows everything is OK after formatting, as well as surface scan shows no problems. After trying to install windows 98 and getting the error message above, when I run scandisk it states there is an error on C with a file that is too long. It then fixes the file problem. Does anyone have any ideas? Please help.

Thank you for your time,

Regards
