internal cd-rw buffer underrun

I just re-installed win2k on my machine and formatted my harddrive, so everything is like new again (or so I hoped) and I re-installed all the drivers and crap I thought I needed to make everything work, but theres two problems still that I can't seem to fix:

My internal ricoh 8x4x32x cd-rw wont fully write any cds, about 10% into a burn session I get a buffer underrun error or something of the like.. I'm using Nero Burning Rom, and I have auto-insert notification turned off.. Any suggestions?

The other problem is no biggie, I'm pretty shure has to do with me needed to update the bios, but I thought I'd just run it by here: My comp doesnt automatically power down now, it just goes to the screen that says "IT is ok to now turn off your computer" and I have to hit the switch on the power supply.. I want it to totally turn off like it did before.

When your system is writing to a CD, it needs to do it without interruption. Once it starts the write it has to collect data from someplace (ie, your hard drive) and write it to the CD without stopping. Buffer underrun means that it couldn't get data fast enough to continue writing.
There are lots of possible reasons. But first, find out how bad the problem is! Try the operation again, except this time, when you go to the burn option, select a speed that is LESS than your burner. Nero offers 8x, 6x, 4x, 2x, 1x.
One of these will fix the problem for sure!
However, that is a temporary fix only, just to get your burning CD's again! Now we need to find out why your PC has slowed down....

Er, funny you should mention the other problem, because mine started doing that today too....ha ha!

Well, I just upgraded about an hour ago to windows xp professional :P So maybe it'll work now, I havent tried yet tho :P

I fixed the power down thing, have to enable APM (advanced power management) under Power Options in the control panel... and if that doesnt work go into bios (press del at startup) and enable it there also.

Thanks for the APM thing, it worked on mine too...ha ha! I wonder how that became unticked? Hmm!! Thats Windblows for you.
Nice thing about Nero is that it works on XP! Unlike certain other CDR/W software.

HEy, somehow I got a cd to burn at 8x with no problems.. :P heh... strange..

I didnt try the XP burning dealie yet though, just used nero.

A variety of reasons for buffer underruns like the media itself might be intolerant to higher speeds. But there are certain settings you should take care of yourself, like ensuring that the temp folder being used is empty and has enough space, your machine's HDDs arent thrashing; turning of caching programs such as fast find etc improve performance as well.

I have Windows XP and Adaptec/Roxio CD burning software 4.0 DOES work for me. Another forum directed me to a place where I could download a file called ecdc_403up. I downloaded this file from a site that sold hardware and installed it. Adaptec burner runs beautifully.

Memory returned. Adaptec/Roxio Easy CD Creator version 4 can be used. You can go to http://www.1pdc.com/support/update/softup.htm

Load Easy CD Creator 4.03 Upgrade This will download ecdc_v403up. Install it and it works, at least for me. Lots cheaper than $79.95 for 5.0 Platinum.

You can burn CD's through Windows Media Player, which is included with XP. That must be what they are talking about when they say XP supports CDRW.

IMHO using Media Player instead of a CD burning program is like crawling instead of sprinting. Besides I hated the idea of scrapping a good program that I had purchased, just because of XP.
