Spoke Too soon!

Well, some of you may remember a blissful post of mine recently bemoaning the LACK of any problems with my dual boot box with 98SE and XP on it. Well.....all WAS well. I had few to no hiccups, although I did notice a few error messages thrown up when I opened a file off the 98SE directory from XP. I would get a message that the file was already being used by #### (me) but the document would open anyway. My son claims that he too got into problems with cross OS apps and documents. Well all seemed just a monor nuisance until I set my wife up a user account in XP. She is only familiar with 98 and I can't 100% make the claim she initiated the BIG problems, but I will say she was dragging allot of stuff from her older PII 233MHz machine over the network. Anyway I was getting error after error to the point that I finally just reformatted the D drive of this box. I am having allot of errors trying to reinstall XP. First error was theat NT\System32 was either missing or corrupt. I kept trying to install anyway and succeded in getting as far as downloading updates to the install process. During the initial setup it would stop and inform me that install detected Symantec antivirus software and would I be OK to disable....click yea and onward and upward to a blue screen notification that Windows had shut down to keep from damaging my computer. Has anybody got a clue as to what I should look at first? Any replys are sheepishly appreciated.

OK similarity to this - so I can't say for sure that this helps but at least you should try..

HPRO would you suggest uninstalling Norton Antivirus in addition to this L2 cache, as this always causes a pause in the setup/install, even a reboot once when I tried.

Yes of course - but as you can't go in to windows so you need to logon to RECOVEY CONSOLE and there then type LISTSVC this will bring up all System critical files which are going to be loaded.. find Norton - it is in there - usually under Symantec - then use the disable command line -

Disable Filename - the file name is the first on the left side of the LISTSVC window.. then it will tell you that it has been set to disabled - restart the setup..

To get all commands of ENABLE DISABLE type HELP DISABLE
to see all Command lines and topics of the RECOVERY CONSOLE use Help enter will adavance on line at the time press space will advance on page - use dir command without any slashes as Win2K and WinXP do not support slashes..
Use CHDIR to change directories - for long filenames you got to use it that way CHDIR \"PROGRAM FILES" and enter..you must type the Hyphens there otherwise you will get bad command as responce..You can not enter the \"Documents and settings" folder you will get ACCESS DENIED ...this one is specially locked out ..

HPRO, thanks for the help I am up and running again although I deleted my wifes user account. She's not ready for XP yet and that suits me (Don't like sharing my PC, anyway. Not usually selfish until it comes to my mosheen!)
