Screen Freezes Frequently

For over a year I have been having problems with my VAIO laptop. SONY has been unable to help so Ifm left with a computer that freezes several times an hour and Ifm forced to ctrl-alt-del. Ifm hoping that someone out there will have a suspicion about what the problem is as SONY assures me that the laptop is in perfect condition.
Could it be Windows ME? Or something else that I could easily upgrade? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as Ifm far from being a computer expert and this problem is driving me nuts.
Craig.

Well, a sure fire test would be to back up all your data, and reformat/reinstall (I'm assuiming here that you have some sort of "recovery CD" that will restore everything to its original state?), but just reinstall Windows (and all that other crap that system manufacturers LOVE to put in their "recovery CD's"). Then try using the system for a day or so with nothing installed but WIndows. If the problem still occurs, get back on the phone with Sony and gripe their heads off. If it doesn't occur, then some program or driver you added to the system is causing your problem. Reinstall programs/components one at a time, using the system for a couple of hours, or a day or so if possible, after installing them. Then you should be able to figure out which one, if it is something you added, is causing the problem.
