Can't boot into safe mode in 98SE
I have searched the forum for a thread that might address this problem, but can't find one. My problem is I'm dual booting SE and XP Pro. I need to get into safe mode in 98SE to run some diagnostics, and the traditional method of holding down the CTRL key whole booting doesn't work. Anybody have any ideas? I've tried the ESC button (gets me into the bios) and someone told me to try the delete button (does nothing). I don't know what else to try except maybe boot from the startup disc and SYS C:. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks

F8 right before the Windows Logo comes up or boot into 98 and goto System Information>Sys. Config. Utility and turn on the option to always show startup menu.

Ok, I had tried the F8 button several times, so I'll try the sys config utility to see what happens. Thanks.

OK, I got it!
I found out you have to be REAL fast on the F8 button when you hit "enter" to boot into 98. Thanks a million.

Hold down the left shift key from the time you see anything on the screen. Even the bios will allow that. That automagically loads the machine in safe mode.
Alternate: Edit msdos.sys (hidden, system, archive file, so you need to attrib it to get the right to see it and work on it) and set bootmenu=1 Then when you're done, change it back. |

It's under the "advanced" tab.

re: bosco
In msconfig on the General tab, look for the Advanced button near the bottom right of the box. Look for "Enable Startup Menu..."
