Upgrading system to win98 and need help
Well, I guess I am a long way from win98. But I would like to get there.
I have a computer with a Intel 486SX. It was out to lunch when I got it so anything is an improvement. I reformatted the drive and reinstalled DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1. However, I cannot get Windows to run unless I go through the Winhelp and then it will boot windows. The real challenge is this. I have a CD rom that I would like to install. Then load windows 95 and upgrade to 98 if possible. The CDR is a Hitachi CDR-7730. So here are the troubles I am facing: 1) Why won't it boot to windows3.1 rather than the MS-DOS Shell that I keep getting? 2) How do I go about installing the CDR if at all possible? From there I can figure the rest out. Well, I think... Thanks for your help! |

I've never run Win98 on a 486 before, but I would expect it to be a real dog. If you still want to do it, why do you want to go through all the trouble of loading the previous versions to upgrade over and over? Get a Win98 bootdisk and install your CDR drive. Boot from the Win98 bootdisk and do a clean install of Win98. If it's just a Win98 upgrade CD, that's not a problem either, run the setup as usual and insert your Win95 CD when prompted for verification of upgrade eligibility.

Well, you might get to 95, but 98 reallly is out of the question on that box.
a 486SX does not have the math coprocessor available, and even with a bunch of memory. The unit will be slow with 95 on it. How much RAM does it have? The CD should be able to be installed on the secondary, as the secondary master, or single. If that's a CD recorder, you won't have the cpu power to use it for anything except a cd rom. If you even had a 486 DX 80-100 that would be possible. But if you go that far, you might as well go further. |
