Hi!
I am trying to run Win2000 Pro on my machine but for some reason I have 50% of CPU used with only OS running. Here is my configuration: 2 CPUs Celeron 533, ATI Xpert 99 32MB AGP, RAM 256MB 2 HD Western Digital and Fujitsu, Sound Blaster Live Value Motherboard: ASUS P2B-D with latest BIOS, Standard 33,6 modem 3Com Network Card, 2 CD-ROMS 48X Creative and CDR Mitsumi, Promise Ultra66 IDE card BUT... When I am installing Win2000 Pro on my machine (typical install) with all devices removed except 1 CD-ROM, floppy and one HD the same CPU loss occures. So again my problem is: ON EMPTY PC CPU usage is 50 - 60% without any applications runnung. Please help if you know the solution. Thank you in advance. |

Have you tried the same configuation with NT4.0? Like to see what kind of cpu usage you get there. One question, not sure if it's relevant with 2000 but are you installing the multiprocessor kernel?

Thanks for input.
I am using Win NT 4.0 SP6 now and there is no problem with high CPUs usage at all. When I was installing Win 200 of course there was multiprocessor kernel installed. So, it seemes to be really strange but it does not help. If you have any other suggestion plz post it here. Thanks again. YG |

Have you looked into the Service Pack 1 update for Windows 2000? There are 3 full pages of bug fixs that the SP covers. Its a 83+ meg download, so you might want to check out the 3 pages first. Unless you have cable modem, then its pretty fast, but still takes like 6 minutes.

Check your bios for the MPS setting, I had the same problem when MPS was set to 1.1, with 1.4 the problem went away. (I have an Abit BP6 mobo).
