registry problem

I have a friend that is running Windows 98 on a Dell Dimension. He has a habit of dragging files around indiscriminately, so strange things happen. I noticed that if you right click on My Computer, then click on Explore, then click on "C", Photoshop opens up. In other words, if you enter Explore, then click on the icon for the C drive, Photoshop opens up. If you click on the plus sign in front of C, then the files in C open normally. I found a copy of Photoshop in C and deleted it (the main copy of Photoshop is in Program Files), then a click on C brought up the error message "file not found". I did a scanreg/fix which put a copy of Photoshop back in C so that a click on C brings up Photoshop again. I think he needs a registry change but I don't know what to chenge. Anyone make sense of this? I think this has been going on for months so a scanreg/restore won't work. He lives 200 miles away so I don't see his computer vey often, but I would like to know the solution for this anomaly.

Search C:\ for a file called "autorun.inf" and delete it, this may help.

Download TweakUI for Windows and then install it - right click - select install from the *.inf file - after this you will find it in Control Panel - select the repair tab and there choose REPAIR ASSOCIATIONS.. that's mostly all it takes..

Wrong forum

Hi,

I accidentally posted my question in the wrong forum, then I couldn't find it again. I just happened to run across it again tonight.

Thanks Hpro and aym_7 for your help. I'll e-mail the guy and tell him what to do. This is a great website.

More help needed

Well, my friend tried the two suggestions that have been offered. He did a search for autorun.inf but there was no file there with that name. He then tried TweakUI. He got a message that TweakUI was trying to correct the problem but could not. When he accesses Explore, then double clicks on the "C" icon, Photoshop opens. Not only that but the C icon has the windows logo on it unstead of the usual drive icon appearance. There must be a registry fix for this, no?

Thanks, Muggs
