XP Problems - HP Scanjet 3200C
Has anyone successfully installed a HP Scanjet 3200c Scanner on a XP operating system. I have been trying and HP still has not developed support for it yet. I originally updated my W98 to XP and kept FAT32 and the scanner worked OK after a HP XP upgrade patch. I have recently done a clean install of XP using NTSF and HP does not support a driver/patch for a clean XP install? They suggest using a Win 2000 driver. I tried that and it made my scanner extremely slow/useless. I left HP an E-mail for automatic notification if there is an update but have not heard anything yet.
Anyone else have any luck? Reb |

Hp does offer a 22Mb update for the 3200c. I could not get it to run with XP Home edition, but works with the XP Pro edition.

Thanks for the reply LiLJimmie,
The problem with the update is that it is not a clean install XP Driver. It is only for Upgrades from 98/ME to XP. I used that when I had done an upgrade from 98se/FAT32 to XP/FAT32. My scanner worked fine. HP has still not released a driver that they say will work for a clean install of XP. Again the update only works for 98/ME updates to XP. I have done a clean install and am now stuck with no HP Scanner. I even tried the upgrade, and confirmed it did not work. I have also tried the Win2000 drivers and no luck. Reb |

BTW, I do have the Pro edition and the update works very poorly, extremely slow. HP does not advertise that it works for a clean install of XP. REb |

Hi rebmo, I have a clean install of XP PRO and used the HP precisionscan LT 2.0 releaesed 1/17/2002. I have no problems with the scanner. As far as it being slow, the scanner was slow from the day I pulled it out of the box and set it up on a Windows 98 PC.

Everyone I know has had trouble reinstalling their HP 3200 and 5200 scanners both in Win 98 and XP, I and two of my friends have switched to Epson 1650 scanners and I think that the other 2 are going to do so as well.
I got virtually no help from HP. So I went and bought an Epson C80 Printer as well, both are working fine. I think HP is driving their customers away. This is a problem that has been around for years. Mike |

I had problems with my HP4200C and XP Pro. Finall got it working after downloading Precision Scan and patches HP SJ451, HP SJ452, HP SJ454 and HP SJ700.

I did try to install the HP precisionscan LT 2.0 releaesed 1/17/2002 and my scanner works if you would call it that. It now takes at least 2-3 minutes to scan stopping and starting all the way through the scan. Under W98 it worked fine and scanned well, non-stop through the cycle, within 20-30 seconds.
I'm about ready to switch, rather than fight. Reb |

I have to admit I am partial to HP products BECAUSE of the support. I recently put a XP home edition as a dual boot on a 98se machine. The drivers with xp worked OK on my HP970CXI DeskJet printer but I had no accompanying software. I downloaded a 45Mb software upgrade on a dial up connection at 31200bps connection.....hours and hours and hours! The upgraded drivers and software for my 6200CXI ScanJet was a smaller self extracting compressed file. No problems with either OS with either peripheral.

Again, I had no problems whatsoever with my 98se upgraded to XP Pro with FAT 32 still intact. The software upgrades HP offers for that OS work fine. I have since done a clean install of XP, and I cannot get the scanner to perform anywhere near the speed of the 98se/XP upgrade OS under FAT 32.

My problem wasn't that I couldn't get my scanner to install; I had a HP 4p scanner that had an 8.5 by 14 scanning bed which was a big plus for me.
When I got my new Dell computer I installed a SCSI card and went to the HP web site to get drivers for XP. What I found was a statement that they didn't have drivers for my scanner and had no plans to do so. That made me so mad I went right out and bought the Epson Scanner. I gave the old reliable HP and my HP DeskJet to a friend along with my old computer. I had planned on getting a new HP 7400 but all the problems my friends were having and their, to hell with you long time users attitude was enough to change my mind. I have to say that the Epson Scanner works great. I do have to add that I fail to see the advantage of having a 12,800 ppi resolution. I made a scan of a postage stamp and it took 580mb of disk space, I suppose that it may come in handy when I make scans of slides and 35mm negatives. Even these would be it the 600 to 800mb range. The standard resolution for graphic arts is only 266 ppi. Mike |

IMHO, this is a perfect example of where an old axiom fits in.....

I have the exact same problem you have with the same scanner and OS. I have a reply from HP that is quite long for a forum reply. I can send it by e-mail if you wish. I haven't tried their recommendations yet as I have logged at least 3 days on my PC with the site recommendations. I even went out and purchased a new scanner. I found it sucked compared to how my HP scanner used to work on 98 and ME. So plan to try again. Thought I would try this forum before I got torqued at HP again. I plan to take a hammer to it and send it back to them if this doesn't work.

Have you had any other scanning devices on your OS? If so, you must get rid of all evidence of the other scanning software and hardware.
This will often require that you do a wildcard search for the scanning software. Even after you have searched out all the software, go into your registry (only if you know what you are doing, if you are not comfortable with working in the registry I would suggest you not go there, always back up your registry prior to editing anything in there), and ensure that all scanners/software is deleted. Go into the device manager and delete the scanners in there also. Shutdown your computer, disconnect your scanner and re-load your software from the beginning, as if new install. You will need the latest software for HP 3200C, ( you may already have it ), sj648en, if memory serves me correctly. Download it to a folder and unzip it. Follow the install wizard instructions. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU GET RID OF ALL OTHER SCANNING SOFTWARE, ANY TRACES!! OR YOUR RELOAD WON'T WORK. After the install, shutdown your computer and restart without the scanner hooked up, this will initialize the software when you start up again with the scanner hooked up and will allow for plug and play, as your software is loaded. Shut down your computer one more time and plug in your scanner, restart, your OS (win 98) should recognize the new hardware, walk through the steps. You may have to browse for your new software, but often times the OS will recognize the scanner and run the wizard accordingly, Good luck! I have done all this with the HP tech support desk and still get a "PPSCAN.VXD" ERROR MESSAGE. ALSO AN "hp 3200c.inf" error code and I tried this twice. They tell me they have not had this error before and may send me the XP CD to load, however awaiting a call back from them. I am thinking that I may still have some sort of scanning software I can't find located on my system somewhere as I also use their all-in-one scanner fax printer office jet, 725. You may have better luck than I did, let me know. |
