fqpissed Still having problems installing Windows XP

I'm still having problem installing Windows XP Home version. This is an OEM Full version, installing on a new WD 30GB hard drive.

It gets to the point where it says" Setup is now starting Windows. But it never does. It sits there a few minutes, and then goes to the same screen to install it again. Goes through the License AGreement again...... and just starts over. I need help. I don't have any instructions with it.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? CAN ANYONE PLEASE WALK ME THROUGH EXACTLY WHAT I SHOULD SEE AND WHAT OPTIONS I SHOULD CHOOSE..... OR IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE DISK?????

The first step to take is probably to walk through all your hardware and make sure that its all compatible.

Question Possible CD problem, what do you think?

I just finished trying this again with a friend walking me through it while he was installing Windows XP on a new hard drive also at the same time. We discovered that for some reason when it gets to the point where it is supposed to start Windows, it jumps back into the SetUp mode.

This is definetly not right. We suspect a faulty CD. What do you think?

I have a ASUS A7V266-E MB, a Western Digital 30GB Hard Drive, a Soundblaster 5.1 sound card, and ASUS, 16x10x40 CD/RW Drive, AMD XP1700 processor, an ASUS V7700TIVX Pure 32M video Card, 256 MB DDR memory.

Does anyone think I should have a compatability problem with these parts??? Please tell me. I don't think I should with these quality parts? Am I right?

I'm looking for confirmation that I probably have a bad Windows XP disk. Does anyone agree?

Hi radar-1-2000,

The motherboard bios update might be a good thing to check (as lwlim points
out) and the hardware compatibility list (as Statica mentioned).

Also, is this an entirely new build? Seems like it, since most of these
parts are recent... If not (& you tried a different OS with this same
motherboard already) remember to clear your CMOS with the jumper on the
motherboard: some settings from the earlier system might be interfering.
[Couldn't hurt to check you bios settings again anyway]

Also, try the install without the sound card in. If you have a network card,
you can leave that out to install later too. Same for modems.

I haven't heard anything about bad install Cds, such a thing could happen,
but isn't a high-percentage shot.

The Hardware Compatibility list is on Microsofts Windows XP site.

Read this...

I got it working by setting my BIOS from "AUTO" detect of my hard drive, to USER HDD. For some reason I couldn't leave it in AUTO. It is very slow in seeing it or something, and when the computer booted, it would sit there detecting the primary master, but then say NONE. Once I set it to Manual, and saved BIOS, it now sees the hard drive.
I still don't understand why the installation went as far as it did if it wasn't detecting the Primary Master Hard drive?????

Anyway, a new problem now. Windows install stops about a third of the way through with a "STOP Screen"
" A problem has been detected and indows has shutdown to prevent damage to your computer......................

More details later.......

How do you have the hard drive jumpered?
Are you using a standard ide ribbon or a 80 wire udma ribbon?
Is it set to primary master?
Didn't see your pm 'til now, should check my mail more often

That's probably your problem,Western Digital hard drives are different, the default setting for master if it's alone on the ribbon,no jumper should be attached, this denotes it as master.
As you're using an 80 wire udma ribbon the drive should be at the end of ribbon(black connector),blue end to motherboard and the drive jumpered to CS(cable select)
If jumpered to CS,the udma protocal is recognized and the system can take advantage of the udma 66/100,etc.

I didn't know that about Western Digital. I bought it OEM, so I didn't get a manual to read with it. I'm learning my lesson about buying OEM products......

Do you think this has anything to do with the error I'm getting on the Windows XP Home installation? This is the page stop error I'm getting:

" A problem has been detected and windows has shutdown to prevent damage to your computer."

Kernal_Data_Inpage_ Error

If this is the first time your've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need. If the problems continue, remove any newly installed hardware or software.
Disable Bios memory options such as caching, or shadowing.

Technical Information

Stop: 0x0000007A (0XE12203F4, 0XC0000098, 0XBF8ED7DD, 0X0D125860)

So far I've removed everything but the video card, HD, CD Rom. Still got the stop error screen...

Jumper the hard drive to CS,if you're using a 80 wire ribbon, make sure blue end is in motherboard and black end is connected to master device,it explains why the bios couldn't detect the hard drive and also could account for all the problems you're having, after all what is the OS being installed on!

Glad to hear it.
Nothing wrong with oem,you can always go to the manufacturer's website and get all the info you need on the product.
