How do delete duel boot option
Okay guys, so I have ME on this computer and installed XP on one of the other partitions on the hard drive.
I have uninstalled XP and kept ME on but I still get the option to boot either into ME or XP at boot up and the default highlighted option is XP, which is no longer on my computer. Each time I boot up I have to select ME. How do I take this option to duel boot off so that it boots directly into ME

on the root of c:\, there is a file called boot.ini. edit that, and remove the line that says "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" (delete the whole line), save it and restart. if that doesn't help, i could show you another way, but that should work.

sure thing.
i've never actually done this with windows me, but HOPEFULLY it works like every other system: go start-run and type "edit c:\boot.ini" in windoes 98 and 2000, this open up the basic editor which allows you to go down and delete the entire line (the same way you would edit a text file). in ME, however, this might open it up in notepad or something. i'm not too sure, but either way, it'll open in a text editor. just get rid of the line you don't want, and go file-save. if you need more help, i'd be happy to oblige. good luck. |

Hey thats a pretty speedy answer thanks.
I just looked at my boot.ini file and it reads like this: (boot loader) timeout=30 default multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)Windows operating systems) multi(0)disk(0)rdish(0)partition(3)windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect c:]"Microsoft Windows" So I guess I take out the 5th line above eh? I was just wondering if I have take out the line that reads /fastdetect cos the way it is written in the file, line 5 in the file above is all on one line and immediately below on the next line is /fastdetect and I dont know if this is a continuation of the 5th line or a line on its own or should I jus tleave that part (/fastdetect? as it is. I have to go now but will let you know how I get on when I get back from work. thanks again Last edited by needhelp; 03-26-2002 at 03:27 PM. |

take out this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdish(0)partition(3)windows="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect it should all read as one line... go from the m- all the way to the -t, and BADABING... you're good to go. |

Another way is to boot with an me boot disk. At the A> type sys c:
That will get rid of the dual boot option without having to edit any files. |

Works like a charm. I do not recommend going back to win9x however some people want to. This method just save some time in that I can do it in just a few seconds.

I believe rewriting the MBR will do it also. It did it for me when I had to. Was dual booting Linux/Win98 then my MBR got corrupted. When I rewrote it it stopped dual booting also.
At the a prompt with a boot disk, type fdisk /mbr if memory serves me correctly |

How to delete dual boot option
needhelp,
If you go the editing route, note: - the BOOT.INI file is write protected. You will need to unprotect it, edit it and then reprotect it. - You will need to do more than just delete the line for XP. The menu is defaulting to XP so you will need to change the default setting also. There appears to be something missing from the BOOT.INI file you posted so I don't want to say change the line that says default multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)Windows to pint to partition 2 but I'm guessing that's what it should be. If you have MSCONFIG (Start > Run > MSCONFIG > OK), it makes editing the file a lot simpler. Here is a link with helpful information about the BOOT.INI file. http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/info/bootini.shtml Good luck. The Old Man |

Thanks guys, the problem is solved.
I edited boot.ini and took out the line that homer suggested and yes it didn't offer the option to boot into XP but it still gave me 2 options and that was "Windows" and option 2 was "Microsoft Windows" When I chose the first option it didn't boot up anything, just looped back to the option window again. When I chose the second option "Microsoft Windows" it booted into ME but I still had to make the choice. "The old man" I think you are right and the line in the boot.ini file that you suggested would need to be deleted too, to make the computer boot straight into ME I think the line must still refer to XP somehow. I think if I had taken out that line it would have worked. By the way I didn't have to do anything to edit the file in the edit window so it mustn't have been write protected. I actually did what crjdriver said and booted from the ME start up disk and at the A: prompt just typed in sys c: No problem, worked like a charm. Thanks a million guys, couldn't have done it without you. P.S. Interesting to note though that the line "default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)Windows " is still there in the boot.ini file Last edited by needhelp; 03-26-2002 at 09:38 PM. |
