Couple Probs Using windows 2000 server
Hi,
A couple problems (1)I posted earlier about my computer stalling in windows xp pro. Well a friend of mine wanted to try her out so we traded OS cds. I am now using Windows 2000 server. Everything is running smoothly except for the stall problem in the beggining. This time the light on my floppy drive does not turn on. I start windows and when everything seems to be loaded I cant open any big program. After about 30 seconds everything runs how its suppose to. But before that, even though my HD light has stopped flashing, if I double click a big program (ie: 3dmark2000, my dsl connection, etc) nothing will happen then about 30 seconds later it will pop up right after I see my HD light flicker for 5 seconds. If I wait the 30 seconds and my HD light flickers then i can run windows as normal. Is there something in my bios i should check? Is this a windows 2000/xp thing? Any suggestions would be great. I had my dsl connection made to start when windows startsup but it will pop up and be inactive for 30 seconds then finally connect to the net, it has the same stall before my system is really ready to go. thx (2) When windows first starts I am prompted to press "Ctrl alt delete" then it ask for my password. "Administrator" is the user name already and I dont enter a pw and press enter and windows starts up. Is there a way to bypass this ctrl, alt, del and Administrator pw thing. I tried taking out the "Administrator"and leaving both blank and pressing enter but it says i must log on. Any suggestions here? (3)Finally, I have a ms explorer 3.0 mouse and when I press left or right click at the same time as I press my shift key nothing happens. I have a an editing program that requires me to use both buttons at the same time. Ive tested it on my desktop and when I right click the desktop and press shift at the same time the small menu doesnt come up. Also my son is an avid gamer and plays counter-strike often. He says when he ducks(shift button) and fires (mouse1 button) he ducks but his gun doesnt fire. The shift button seems to be deactivating my mouse for some reason. Its the shift button directly under the enter key. Any suggestions here? Thanks alot everyone for your help. -eddie |

1st thing before installing Win2000 Pro , Win XP Pro or Win2000 Server, check the system hardware requirement. Secondly, check for the hardware compatibility for your pheripherals and components. During the process of installing Win2000 Server, in the graphical mode, it will prompt you for a administrative password, you will need to put in in. When in the final phase, after, it starts and prompt you to press control alt delete, you will need to enter that password which you entered during the graphical mode. Also make sure you have sufficient hard disk space for your system files. And make sure you have at least 128MB of RAM.
Still don't think you should use NT Server, it's really "Over-Kill", if you aint' building a LAN. Anyway, best is to stick with Win XP, and resolve the problem. With Server, it's really unnecessary venture. Goodluck! |

i think with server, ctrl+alt+delete always has to be pushed, and a user name/password must always be supplied. i don't think there's anyway to change it (i could be wrong... i haven't looked over the registry throroughly). if you were using professional, that would be a little different

I've read other threads on this subject and it seems that server always requires a log-on.

You can use AutoAdminLogon to automatically logon to the user you specify.
Open the registry editor and go to HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Windows NT > Current Version > Winlogon Set the DefaultUser value to the user you want to log on with Set/Create the DefaultPassword to the users's password Set/Create the AutoAdminLogon value to 1 This does place an unencrypted copy of that password in the registry, so be aware of that security hole.
