I recently purchased a new computer. P4, 1.5/40.
It came with Windows XP Home Edition installed. I have most recently been preparing an online resume and an online commentbox to post on my website. I had planned on publishing this site to my own personal web server because my cable company (which provides a limited amount of space for free)doesn't support ASP pages. Well..........it turns out that Windows XP Home Edition doesn't include a personal web server!! So, now I'm forced to upgrade to XP Professional or "downgrade" (if you want to call it that) to 2000 or 98 in order to take advantage of the personal web server. So, in a nutshell...........I can't use the free space allotted to me by my cable company because they don't support ASP pages. AND, I can't use my own computer as a web server because I have XP Home Edition. I'm now faced with the decision of purchasing space from someone else (which I really don't want to do), or adding an operating system. I don't know alot about having dual operating systems. Can anyone offer some clear direction? What should I do........purchase web space or add an operating system? I'm really kind of irritated that XP Home Edition doesn't include personal web server. Why would they take it out? Grrrrrrrrrr! Thanks. Joshua in Tampa |

are you sure, IIS isnt installed by default, you have to add it from the add/remove control panel. In the add windows components tab. Double check before you purchase anything.

Unfortunately, IIS isn't available. Checking the Control Panel lead to nothing, but I definitely had my fingers crossed.
I think I'm going to end up adding Win98-second edition to my machine. I don't know how, but I'll figure it out one way or another. I feel a little confused about partitioning. I'm going to check out Apache.com now. We'll see how that goes. I don't want to get in over my head, and Cobra mentioned that it's not for the "faint of heart". Hmmm. Adios, amigos. Joshua |

IIS is not included in Windows XP Home Edition, only Professional or above. I wouldn't install it anyway, Apache is more secure, but there is a hack available that might work. http://www.15seconds.com/issue/020118.htm |

DrZaius, what a great link. Thank you very much.
I just might try the hack. As for Apache, I just got back from their site, and I downloaded and tried to open a .tar file containing a HTML server. I don't know what program to use to open this kind of file. I think I need a Unix or Linux OS. Am I wrong? This site has proved to very helpful so far. I'm so impressed. I heard about this site from Dave Risley, one of the founders of this site. I sat next to him in an Exit Requirement course at USF during his last semester before graduating. I'm glad to see that this site offers so much more than just the "how-to" on piecing together computers. Awesome site. |

You need a program like WinZip to extract a TAR file:
http://www.winzip.com/ If you're looking for a super easy web server check out SimpleServer: http://www.analogx.com/contents/down...work/sswww.htm No nearly as configurable and advanced as Apache, but it might be what you're looking for. |

Been studying this hack. I think I can do it, but I get a little lost at instruction number 5.
http://www.15seconds.com/issue/020118.htm I mean...will I need to find these Cd's before I can run this hack? Or am I misunderstanding what I'm reading here. Thanks for all of your help. I'm going to look at analogx.com right now. Joshua |

Yeah, from reading the instructions it looks like you do need the WinXP Adv Server CDs. Kind of defeats the purpose really.

Dr Zaius: Let me show you what I'm trying to do. It is very simple.
http://web.tampabay.rr.com/morgan/ I built this scrawny little site using FrontPage, and it is connected to an Access database (that it created). I just need some place to keep it that supports ASP. The Link at the bottom of the page (rather indescript) should present all the entries in the table in a new window, but unfortunately it doesn't because tampabay.rr.com doesn't support ASP. Anyway, that's my little creation. I appreciate your guidance. Thanks. |

JahShuWah: Well, since you need ASP for the database, the only options I can think of are IIS or Apache::ASP.
